Blepharoplasty, as known as eyelid aesthetics, is an aesthetic application that involves removing excess skin from the eyelids.
As one of the signs of aging, the eyelids become loose. This is because the skin loses its elasticity and the muscles that support the eyelids weaken. Over time, excess skin and excess fat can build up above and below the eyelids. This can cause drooping eyebrows, drooping eyelids, and under eye bags. It is possible to find solutions to these problems with blepharoplasty.
Blepharoplasty: Candidates
At the age when the skin begins to lose its elasticity, that is, at the age of 30 and above, under eye bags, droopy eyelids, wrinkles, sagging and crow's feet begin to appear. Skin loosening, especially in the eyelids, leads to drooping of the upper lid. In some cases, it can even obstruct vision and needs to be treated.
Blepharoplasty can be performed for aesthetic reasons as well as for the elimination of functional disorders. Depending on the case and the patient's preference, the upper eyelid and the lower eyelid can be treated separately, or both. Blepharoplasty can also be combined with other cosmetic surgeries such as brow lift.
How is Blepharoplasty Applied?
Eyelid aesthetics basically has two different procedures. Separate treatments are applied for the lower eyelid and the upper eyelid. It is usually performed by anesthetizing the operation area. The procedure applied to the upper eyelid is simply the removal of excess skin and muscle tissue with the help of an incision. The incisions are hidden in the eyelid crease. In this way, the scar won't be visible.
When it comes to lower eyelid, improvement of the loosening of the buccal fat pads on the cheekbones is main purpose. After the intervention on the fat pads, it is checked whether there is any problem, if not, no extra operation is required.
If surgery is decided, the incision is made under the eyelashes. It is aimed to reshape the fats under the skin.
Things to Consider After Eyelid Aesthetics
After undergoing an eyelid surgery, the patient should follow certain instructions. Avoiding heavy exercises for a week, not smoking, not rubbing the eyes, not using contact lenses, and not using blood thinners are the main ones. If non-dissolvable stitches were used during the surgery, the doctor will make an appointment for these stitches to be removed.
With blepharoplasty, it is possible to achieve a youthful appearance in the upper face without any change in shape.
Blurred vision may be experienced for a short time after surgery. This usually returns to normal after a few days. Full recovery can take about four weeks.
It can be said that there is no upper age limit for blepharoplasty. People with good general health can have eyelid surgery if they wish. However, the doctor may not recommend this surgery to people with certain conditions.
