A breast lift is performed for both aesthetic and functional reasons. The primary purpose of this is to change the shape of the breasts. After the medical operation and recovery are completed, the patient's overall body image is improved. The upper body look will be proportioned, so the whole body will seem more aesthetic.

What is the Purpose of Breast Lift Surgery?

With a breast lift, also known as Mastopexy the undesired saggy breast look will be gone.  Downward nipple points can be corrected too. These are the aesthetical results. Since breast ptosis may also cause shoulder and chest pain and the surgery helps to solve/heal this problem, it can easily be said that breast lifting increases body functionality too. Various surgical stages are applied in order to obtain natural-looking breasts;

  • Consultation,
  • Lab tests,
  • Skin removal,
  • Breast reshaping,
  • Raising the breasts.

As only breast lift surgery can be performed, breast reduction and breast augmentation surgeries can also be included in the procedure.

During the Breast Lift Procedure

Breast lift is done with regional anesthesia (local anesthesia) or general anesthesia so the anesthetist will examine you before the surgery to determine which anesthetic is most suitable for you. After that, you undergo the surgery. The type of breast lift surgeries can change however, in any case, the incisions will be made (the location of the incisions might change). During the operation, in order to lift:

  • Breast tissue is reshaped with stitches,
  • The size of the areolas (nipples) is reduced,
  • Excess breast skin is removed,
  • Areolas are carried up higher positions,
  • Incisions are sutured with stitches.

The surgeon may perform only one, more, or all of the above. The current state of the breast structure and patient expectations will determine the process.

After the Mastopexy

After the surgery, the patient’s breasts are covered with gauze. The healthcare professional will place small tubes under your breasts to stop fluid blood flow. You may feel pain around the incision lines. The doctor will prescribe painkillers. You will see bruises and swelling when you look at your breasts. These temporary conditions will fade out within 6-7 weeks. You should avoid sexual intercourse for 1-2 weeks, sleep on your back, protect the relevant side from physical blows, and of course, you should listen to your surgeon’s instructions. Tubes and bandages will be removed in a few days and the stitches will be taken out within 2 weeks. Also, you might be asked to wear a medical support bra for a month. The healthcare professional will guide you in the most accurate way, so it is very important to attend follow-ups.

Before the surgery, your medical records will be obtained. Your healthcare provider will ask you questions about your medical background and your doctor will consider your answers. For example, if your family has a history of breast cancer, you should tell them or you should share your test results (such as biopsies and mammograms). The surgeon will do medical exams and also explain the whole process with its risks, results, and benefits.

A breast lift is most suitable for people with sagging breasts. Women with loosened breast tissues, or with downward-pointing nipples, those who have undergone bariatric surgery, and those who want to have a mommy makeover are among the most suitable candidates.

Breast lift results are observed in a short time. So, when the bandage and tubes come off, you can notice the difference. However, you will have to wait a few months for more accurate results. Because redness, wounds, swelling, and bruises will decrease /disappear over time.
